Bringing a baby into the world is one of the most emotional, beautiful, and life-changing experiences you’ll ever have—and it’s also one of the fastest seasons to slip by. That’s why I love capturing newborn portraits: to freeze time and preserve those tiny details, sleepy stretches, and tender new beginnings forever.
If you’ve booked a session with me (or you’re thinking about it), here’s everything you need to know to feel prepared, relaxed, and confident walking into your newborn session.
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester. I reserve a limited number of due dates each month to ensure flexibility when your baby arrives. Once your little one makes their debut, we’ll schedule your session for when they’re 5–14 days old—a sweet spot where they’re still sleepy, curled, and easily posed.
While shooting in the comfort of your home, your newborn session will be slow-paced, baby-led, and deeply intentional. There’s no pressure, no rush—we’ll take breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and snuggles as needed. I’ll gently guide the session and handle baby with care while you relax and soak in the magic.
Before the session, I recommend loosely dressing your baby in a simple zip-up onesie or swaddle—something easy to remove without disturbing them. Turning the thermostat up a little helps keep your baby cozy and sleepy.
A full tummy = a happy, sleepy baby. Try to feed baby right before the session begins (or when you arrive), and don’t worry if they need to eat again mid-shoot. I always allow extra time so we can follow baby’s natural rhythm.
Stick to soft, neutral colors—creams, whites, beiges, greys, or pastels. These tones photograph beautifully and allow your baby to be the focus. Moms, you’re think comfortable, flattering dresses perfect for postpartum. Dads can opt for a simple tee or button-down shirt in a coordinating neutral.
Want to include a special heirloom blanket, handmade hat, or meaningful accessory? I love incorporating personal details into your session. These touches tell your baby’s story in a unique and heartfelt way.
I know this time can feel overwhelming—you’re healing, adjusting, and running on very little sleep. But I promise: you don’t need to have it all together for your session to be beautiful. I’ll gently guide everything so you can just be present and soak in these fleeting moments.
Your newborn doesn’t need to “perform.” They’re already perfect, just as they are.
